At noon on Tuesday I arrived in New York City. After a long night of packing and preparation without any sleep, I was exuberant to find that I had three seats to myself on the plane. I’ve never slept better on a plane! I had a long layover so I decided to head into Manhattan for some lunch. This small excursion was very much a foresight of what is to come between now and August. Although NYC is in the US, it is hard to imagine how different the Big Apple is from the Texas suburbs where I grew up. Hustle and bustle everywhere.
How much did that bus and subway cost?
Don’t get in the way or you’ll be run over.
Do New Yorkers understand that their subways are the most interesting place to people watch? On that note, why is the lady sitting next to me feeding chips to her husband who is standing in front of her? Maybe he has really bad balance and must grip the rails so firmly that he is not able to self nourish…
I have been to New York many times before, but this time was the first unplanned visit. Trying to figure out what subway and bus to get on is hard enough, but finding a decent looking place to chow was equally difficult. I used Yelp and finally stumbled on Empanada Mama.
I love me some empanadas, so I had to see how this highly “yelped” locality would stack up. I’d give it a 7/10.
My chicken, beef and cuban empanadas were pretty good, but the my cocktail was great. Just what I needed to relax in the big city.
Afterwards I found my way to a bakery and picked a delicious, and massive, red velvet cupcake. I didn’t consume the entire thing until I was all the way through security at JFK.
Again on the JFK-ZRH flight I had an empty seat next to me. I could see the jealousy boiling inside the person across the isle who was squeezed between two other travelers.
The flight was great and I’m finally safely in Zürich! I had dress nicely for stand-by flight, but I didn't want to carry those clothes across Europe with me so I gave them to a person at the train station who looked like he could use some fresh threads.
I took a quick train ride from the flughafen (airport) to the city center of Zurich. When I got on the train I thought to myself, "this is a really nice rain car!" Turns out it was a first class rail car and I was not welcome there without the proper ticket! Oops.
For some reason, my phone won’t connect to a carrier over here, so I’m te...I just got kicked out of the shop I was working at...on to Starbucks! As I was saying, my phone currently won't connect to a carrier over here, so I won't receive any calls or texts. It's sad how disconnected I feel just because my phone can't make and send calls and texts...maybe I'm overly dependent on it. I'm going to go string up my hammock in the park and take a nap until my rendezvous with Brett this evening.
